Privacy Policy

The Understood In apps — today Understood In Spanish, with more languages to follow, all built on the same engine — (“Understood In”, “the app”, “we”, “us”) are made by Olivia Renee Studio, LLC. This policy applies to every Understood In app and to the understoodin.com website. It explains what information they handle, how it is used, and the choices you have, and it was written against what the apps actually do, not from a template. Questions? Use our contact form.

1. What stays on your device

Everything you do in the app is stored locally on your phone or tablet and is never sent to us. That includes your completed lessons and scores, XP and streaks, the spaced-repetition schedule of every word you have learned, your misses, custom flashcards and quizzes, stories and conversations you have finished, your chosen languages and voice settings, and any reminders you set. Because nothing is synced to us, we cannot recover it for you: if you delete the app, that data is gone unless your own device backup (iCloud, Google) includes it or you exported it (Settings → Export progress).

2. What we do not collect

• No account, email address, name, or password — the app has no sign-up.
• No analytics, attribution, or crash-reporting libraries. We do not measure how you use the app.
• No location, contacts, photos, calendar, or health data — the app never asks for those permissions.
• No audio recordings — see section 3.
• No payment details — see section 6.

Apple and Google may show us aggregate crash and performance diagnostics in their developer dashboards, but only if you have turned on diagnostic sharing at the operating-system level.

3. Speaking practice and the microphone

Speaking exercises are optional: you can skip every one of them, and if you decline the microphone permission the app skips them for you. When you tap Tap & speak, the app listens until you stop or pause, compares what was recognised with the target sentence, and shows you the result. The app does not store recordings or transcripts — the recognised text is used for that one exercise and discarded.

• iPhone and iPad: recognition uses Apple's Speech framework. When your device supports on-device recognition for Spanish (most iPhones on recent iOS versions do), the audio is processed on the device and does not leave it. On devices that do not, Apple's speech recognition service processes the audio under Apple's privacy policy.
• Android: recognition uses your device's speech recognition service — typically Google's. Depending on the device and its installed language packs, that service may process the audio on Google's servers under Google's privacy policy.

Spanish audio you hear in lessons is produced by your device's built-in text-to-speech voices; no audio is downloaded from us.

4. Ads in the free version

The free version shows ads served by Google AdMob: a banner on the Learn and Review screens and an occasional full-screen ad after a lesson's result screen. Ads never appear inside a lesson. To serve, cap and measure ads and to detect fraud, Google may process your device's advertising identifier (the IDFA on iOS, the Advertising ID on Android), IP address, and limited device and usage signals. On iOS the app also registers SKAdNetwork, Apple's privacy-preserving system for measuring ad-driven installs without identifying you. How Google uses this information is described in Google's advertising policy.

Your choices:

• Consent (EEA, UK, Switzerland): before ads load, the app asks for your choice through Google's User Messaging Platform. Change or withdraw it any time in Settings → Privacy options, a row that appears where consent rules require it.
• App Tracking Transparency (iOS): iOS asks whether the app may track you across other companies' apps and websites. Declining makes ads less relevant; it does not remove them. Change your mind in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
• Android: reset or delete your Advertising ID, or opt out of ad personalisation, in Android Settings → Privacy → Ads.
• Remove ads: Understood In Pro removes all ads. No lesson or feature is ever locked behind it.

A note for U.S. state privacy laws: we do not sell your data, but personalised advertising through Google AdMob may count as “sharing” or a “sale” for cross-context behavioural advertising under laws such as California's CCPA/CPRA. The controls above turn it off, and Pro removes advertising entirely.

5. Learning content

The course was written by AI and reviewed for accuracy. Lessons are explained in the language you choose in the app; the translations other than English are machine-generated. This is disclosed inside the app. Your choice of language is a setting stored on your device and is not sent anywhere.

6. Purchases

Understood In Pro is a subscription sold through the Apple App Store or Google Play. Apple or Google processes the payment and holds the receipt; the app only learns whether the subscription is active and remembers that on your device so ads stay off. We receive no name, email or payment-card details, and nothing about your purchase is sent to any server of ours. Manage or cancel in your App Store or Google Play account settings; the full terms (price, length, auto-renewal) are shown on the upgrade screen before you buy.

7. Reminders, widgets and backups

• Reminders are optional local notifications scheduled on your device (a daily reminder at a time you choose and a 9 pm streak nudge). There is no push service; nothing about a reminder leaves your phone.
• Home-screen widgets read your streak, due-word count and a word of the day from the app's local storage on the same device.
• Export / Import progress writes a file that you choose where to save or send. It contains your progress data only, and nothing is uploaded to us in the process.

8. The understoodin.com website

This site is static and hosted by Cloudflare. It sets no cookies of its own and runs no analytics. Like any website, our hosting provider sees your IP address and standard request data when a page is served, under Cloudflare's privacy policy.

9. Who we share information with

We hold no personal information about you, so there is nothing of ours to share. The third parties that process data in the course of using the app are the ones named above: Google (AdMob and the User Messaging Platform in the free version; on Android, the device's speech recognition service and Google Play distribution and billing), Apple (Speech recognition where not on-device, App Store distribution and billing), and Cloudflare (this website). We would disclose information if required by law, but in practice we have none to disclose.

10. Children

Understood In is a general-audience language course and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. If you are a parent and believe a child has used the app in a way that concerns you, contact us and we will help; ad behaviour is governed by the consent and identifier controls in section 4.

11. Your rights and choices

• Access, export, delete: your data is on your device. Export it with Settings → Export progress, erase it with Settings → Reset progress, or delete the app.
• Ads: the consent, tracking and advertising-ID controls in section 4.
• Depending on where you live (for example the EEA/UK under the GDPR, or U.S. states such as California), you may have rights to access, correct, delete or port personal data, to object to certain processing, and to withdraw consent. Because we do not hold personal data, requests will usually concern Google's advertising data, which you control through the settings above; for anything else, contact us. We will not treat you differently for exercising a right, and you may complain to your local data-protection authority.

12. Data retention and security

We retain nothing, because nothing is sent to us. Data on your device stays until you reset it or delete the app. Advertising data is retained by Google according to its policies. The app communicates with the internet only for ads (free version), consent, and store purchases, all over encrypted connections.

13. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, the new version will be posted at this address with an updated date. If a change materially affects how the app handles your information, the app's Settings will point you here.
